Historically Painted Hides
The painted hides we create are researched very carefully from actual observed museum pieces, photographs, early journals and detailed notes. The primary area of interest is the central and northern plains, upper plateau and mountainous regions of western Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana from early historic to reservation periods (circa 1830 to 1900).
| Painted hides can vary from commercial leather to brain tan deer, elk, moose, or buffalo. We use primarily alum tanned hair on hides Since we have our own hair-on tannery, we control the quality of any material used, thus maintaining quality while controlling costs. The majority of hides used are from the Rocky Mountain area.
| All paints used are adapted to the use of the item. This may vary from earth paints to oil base paint.
| No articles are treated with patina or aged unless specified by the buyer. We sign each piece in an inconspicuous location to avoid resale of the item as an "old piece." |
| All types of feather used are hand painted to assure an accurate reproduction.
