A common feather design found on early painted robes. This elk robe would have been worn exclusively by men. Each painted feather could have symbolized a special accomplishment of the owner.

Sioux Painted Deer Robe

This earth painted design represents an 1876 Sioux pony raid against Crows. The Sioux are represented by their long hair braids, while the Crow are painted with their typical top-knot of hair in the front. The six horse heads symbolizes "many horses." these were worn by the men of the tribe or hung in the rear of the tipi.
